Slow Speeds, Safer Streets: Share Your Feedback on the Redmond Speed Study

Reducing speeds is one of the most important ways to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on our streets. Currently the City of Redmond is soliciting feedback on speeds to identify where speeding is occurring on arterials and connector streets and what kind of treatments could help reduce speeding. Slower moving vehicles are significantly less likely to seriously injure or kill people in collisions. The City of Redmond adopted a Vision Zero resolution in July 19, 2022 and reducing speeds is integral to achieving that goal.
From Smart Growth America’s most recent report Dangerous By Design, “Urban areas continue to be the deadliest places for people walking. Between 2015 and 2024, the percentage of pedestrian deaths on urban roadways increased by 6 percent. Roads designed for speed in places filled with homes, businesses, transit stops, and other destinations that create complex activity and encourage frequent use by people walking will continue to produce deadly outcomes until safety becomes the top priority.”
As the City of Redmond continues to grow, it is important that our streets prioritize people’s safety whether they are walking, biking, or driving to get where they need to go. As you spend time clicking around the interactive map, it is clear that many people are concerned about speeding and have experienced near misses.
